What Snowboard Jacket Should I Buy?
Shopping for the right jacket can seem a little overwhelming. Insulated vs. shell, various types of water proofing and secret hidden pockets can confuse to the point where some just want to give up. Here are a few common questions and answers to help guide your choice for a new snowboard jacket.
Are you using this jacket for snowboarding?
If so, stay away from down or heavily insulated options and make sure you choose something with at least 5K water resistance. Super heavy jackets are generally much too warm when riding since you will work up a sweat on your own. GoreTex is the only material that can be categorized as 'waterproof' but ratings of 5-20K do have a varying degree of solid water resistance to help keep you warm and dry.
Will this be a city / commuter jacket?
If you plan to use this jacket to stand outside and wait for the train in 10 degree temps, look for high insulation or ideally, down insulation. Down insulation and other brand insulations (3M, Thinsulate, etc.) will warm up quickly and retain body heat. GoreTex offers top of the line wind and water proofing. Keep in mind that the wind can be half of the battle so the ultimate in street jacket warmth would be GoreTex down.
What do all these numbers mean?
When it comes to how much water and wind resistance a jacket has, you will refer to the set of numbers listed on the tag. There is an industry standard when it comes to this testing, so 99.9% of all outerwear brands will use it. You will see something like 10K/10K. The first number is the water resistance and second number is the breathability. Under 10k is good for day to day use but not ideal for more extreme conditions. 10K and over is best for very wet conditions and GoreTex (not on the K scale) is the top of line when it comes to waterproofing and breathability.
