How To Buy Snowboard Pants
Time to choose the perfect pair of snowboard pants? No, you should not just wear jeans on the mountain. Jeans will freeze and you will become colder and less mobile than you can imagine. There are a lot of choices when it comes to snowboard pants, but it's easy to narrow them down if you know what you want. Let us help you make the right choice.
What do all the numbers mean?
When you are buying outerwear, each item will generally have a double number rating that is referring to the water proofing and breathability of that particular item. For example, a 10k/5K rating means the pants you are looking at have a 10,000 water proof rating and a 5,000 breathability rating. Most items will range from 5K on the lower end to 20K on the high end and at the very top is Gore Tex, which is the only fabric that can really use the term waterproof everything else is just water resistant.
Are you a beginner snowboarder or skier?
If so, keep in mind that you will likely be spending some time on your bottom. So, a little extra water proofing would probably be a good idea. We recommend staying in the 10k and above range. also bonus points for pants that have fleece reinforcement or padding in the butt or knee area.
What kind of conditions will you be riding in?
If you are going to be knee-deep in powder in the back country, Gore Tex is the only way to go. For your average bluebird day on the groomers, 5K+ will be just fine.
What do the different fits offer?
This is where style comes in to play but here are a few tips:
- The super slim leg look is in, but if your pants are too tight, air cannot move freely inside which means you can easily overheat.
- Baggier pants allow for more air flow but too much room makes it hard to trap that warm body heat and you can actually loose some of that warmth.
- For max performance, shoot for something right in the middle with a regular type fit.
