How To Buy Snowboard Socks
Don't just settle for everyday cotton socks when you are out on the mountian. The right snowboard sock will keep you warm and dry all day long. This little checklist will help you make the right choice on your next pair of socks.
Why not cotton?
When cotton gets wet, it's absorbs all the moisture which keeps you feeling wet and uncomfortable. It can then freeze (if the temps are right) which leaves you with soaking wet, super cold feet.
Thick and cushy -vs- thin?
Just because you are going to be on snow doesn't mean you have to choose the thickest pair of socks you can find. Acrylic socks will generally be a little on the thicker side and are great for insulation and offer good breathability. Wool socks can be much thinner and still offer the same level of warmth and breathability. If you run warm, choose wool. If you run cold, you can choose a thicker wool or acrylic option.
Why do some socks have additional padded areas?
Some socks have added padding for common pressure points. Many snowboard socks will offer a little extra cushion in the lace zones and sometimes extra support or thickness around the arch of your foot which adds both comfort and support.
Why is wool so good for socks?
Wool by nature is one of the best insulators and also breathes very well despite it's warm feel. Wool will offer the best temperature regulation, making sure you are comfortable and dry at all times. Also note that Merino wool is a big hit since it takes away any of that classic itchy wool feel.
